Paraquat use on lupins

24/9/2025

CBH has conducted several years of research into the use of paraquat pre-harvest in lupins (crop-topping) and has been monitoring paraquat residue levels in grain delivered. Europe is an important market for Western Australian lupins and has a Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) of 0.02 mg/kg for paraquat in lupin grain, which is 50 times lower than the Australian MRL of 1 mg/kg. In order to maintain access to this major market, along with others, it is important that we minimise paraquat residues in lupin grain.

Based on extensive residue testing of grain and investigation into results, CBH has found some practical measures that can be taken by growers to minimise paraquat residues in lupin grain. The below technical information sheet provides some information and advice to reduce paraquat residues in grain, to help maintain access to this important market for Western Australian growers.

Managing spray drift in spring 03/11/2021 Normally we consider spray drift to be a risk when spraying a post-emergent herbicide alongside a susceptible crop, for example applying 2,4-D or MCPA to a wheat crop next to a canola crop. However, spray drift can be an issue all year round.

Managing firebreaks and chemical residues 31/08/2021 Firebreaks are often created by applying a non-selective herbicide to a 2-3m strip around the edge of a paddock. When done correctly this can be extremely effective, but there can be a risk of creating chemical residues in grain.

Pre-harvest herbicide applications 29/08/2022 Pre-harvest herbicide application or “crop-topping” can be a good opportunity to reduce weed seed numbers for the following year. Due to the products registered and the nature of the applications it is important that growers consider the impact of these late applications on chemical residues in grain.

Observing harvest withholding periods in broadacre crops 12/08/2021 A harvest withholding period (WHP) for grain crops is the minimum amount of time that must elapse between the application of a pesticide and the harvesting of a crop. Find out more about why they are important.
