CBH celebrates first bulk oat shipment from Esperance Port

Grower-owned co-operative CBH Group has celebrated Esperance Port’s first bulk oat shipment, marking a significant milestone for growers and Western Australia’s oat export industry.
The MV Sasebo Ace began loading at Esperance Port on 17 August, carrying 6,600 tonnes of milling oats alongside 56,000 tonnes of feed barley bound for Xinsha, China.
It is the first bulk oat shipment to be exported from Esperance Port, adding to CBH’s established oat export pathways through Albany and Kwinana ports.
To recognise the shipment, CBH hosted a group of Esperance oat growers at the port, giving them the opportunity to tour the vessel and discuss the market outlook for oats.
CBH Chief Marketing & Trading Officer Paul Smith said the shipment was an exciting milestone that reflected growing international demand for the WA cereal crop.
“Western Australian oats are recognised globally for their quality, and demand from key markets such as China continues to support the industry’s growth,” Mr Smith said.
“This is coinciding with increased oat production in the Esperance Zone, as well as in the more established production areas in the Kwinana and Albany zones.
“As Australia’s largest international exporter of oats, CBH is focused on growing long-term markets for Western Australian oats and using our customer relationships to create lasting value for growers.
CBH Head of Shipping Pia van Wyngaard said the shipment showed how CBH’s scale, supply chain and shipping network allowed the co-operative to respond when customer demand, production and logistics aligned.
“As a large grower-owned co-operative, CBH is well-placed to act on export opportunities that create value for growers,” Ms van Wyngaard said.
“In this case, we were able to load 6,600 tonnes of milling oats alongside an existing feed barley cargo bound for China, providing another export pathway for Esperance growers.”
The shipment forms part of CBH’s ongoing work to develop markets for Western Australian oats, support the growth of the industry and deliver long-term value for growers.
