Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation Scholarship

In partnership with the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation, we offer exclusive scholarship opportunities for young Western Australians to develop key life skills aboard the STS Leeuwin II leadership voyages each year.

The scholarships are five zones throughout our network: the Midwest Zone, Central Wheatbelt Zone, Albany Zone, Esperance Zone and the City of Kwinana.

Run by not-for-profit organisation the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation, the week-long voyage aims to challenge and inspire young people to realise their personal potential through the unique medium of tall ship sailing.

The scholarship provides the opportunity for young people to engage in all aspects of the program and step out of their comfort zone through challenges such as climbing the 33-metre main mast and working aloft, navigating the ship and taking the helm, standing watch while sailing at night, setting and handling sails and much more. The voyage will also enable the successful scholarship recipients to surround themselves with active new friends, develop skills for the workplace and to test their personal limits. For students in year’s 10-12, participation goes toward your WA Certificate of Education as part of your WA Statement of Student Achievement.

2020 Scholarship Recipients:

  • Amber Bestry (Midwest Zone)
  • Alex Buswell (Central Wheatbelt Zone)
  • Cade Moore (Albany Zone)
  • Chelsea Lankford (Kwinana Zone)
  • Jesse Booker (Central Wheatbelt Zone)
  • Kellen South (Esperance Zone)
“I think the voyage has helped me to gain confidence in myself…”
Fraser Hagboom, Fremantle to Geraldton - April 2019

In April 2019, 15-year-old Dowerin student, Fraser Hagboom, completed his scholarship voyage from Fremantle to Geraldton.

“The best part of the voyage was that I got to challenge myself,” said Fraser.

“As a kid off a farm I’ve never had much to do with the ocean. I learnt a lot about how a sailing ship works and how to maintain it.

“I think the voyage has helped me to gain confidence in myself and to be able to work with people I have never seen before.”

Fraser’s mom, Amanda said: “The opportunity really enabled Fraser to get out of his comfort zone, push himself and build on his leadership skills. He really enjoyed the whole experience”.
